KCLWMS saved our biggest trip of 2011-12 to the very end of the academic year when we could enjoy the best of the British summer weather and (for most of us!) enjoy the time off after exams. The 3Peaks Challenge is perhaps the best known challenge for all UK based adventurers and mountaineers – and was a big ambition of ours! Taking on this challenge we raised money for the UK’s Mountain Rescue Charities. Our target for the whole society was to raise £3,000. This was donated to the Scottish Highlands, Lake District, Snowdonia and Somerset and Avon Mountain Rescue Teams.
The 3 Peaks Challenge involved climbing the highest mountains in Scotland (Ben Nevis, 1344m), Wales (Snowdon, 1085m) and England (Scafell Pike, 978m) on the weekend of Fri 1st June – Sun 3rd June. In order to reach our target of £3,000 we asked each team member to commit to raising £150. The cost of the trip was £80 per person. This included petrol costs (the bulk of the expenses), food for the weekend and tent pitching fees. As always the event was open to everyone – medics and non-medics alike!
